Clean Steel Standards and Optimizing Gear Design
Clean, inclusion-free steel is essential for producing durable, reliable gears, so manufacturers should vet suppliers on their melting and refining practices. Choosing a strong clean-steel partner cuts the risk of failures while reducing weight, cost, and energy use.

FTM 2026 Presentation Spotlight
Power skiving has moved from specialty process to production mainstay in automotive, aerospace and wind energy gearing, but what the cutter leaves behind in the root fillet still sits largely outside the rating calculation. In "Effect of Power Skiving Parameters on Gear Tooth Root Stress Using Process Simulation and Finite Element Analysis," Nikolaos Tapoglou (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) couples a kinematic simulation of the skiving process with finite element analysis to trace how machining-induced flank and root deviations shift tooth root bending stress. A parametric study shows just how sensitive root stress is to those variations — a step toward process-informed gear design rather than after-the-fact inspection. He presents Wednesday, Oct. 7, in Track 1, Session 4: Manufacturing, Materials & Heat Treatment.
FTM is where we select many of the technical articles that run in Gear Technology. FTM 2026 takes place Oct. 5–7 at the Hilton Rosemont/Chicago O'Hare in Rosemont, Ill., co-hosted with the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE). Early-bird registration ends Aug. 14.

Gear Forging Round-Up 2026
Forged gears beat cut gears because of grain flow. Machining a gear from bar or plate cuts through the material's fiber structure right at the tooth flanks, where bending fatigue does its damage. A near-net or net-forged tooth keeps that fiber running along the profile, which reinforces the root fillet and the tooth's beam strength.

Dresser-independent profile modifications in generating grinding
Profile modifications on gears often mean additional dressing tools, extra costs, and longer lead times. With DIP (dresser-independent profile modifications), Liebherr has developed a generating grinding method that, for the first time, allows for profile modification during dressing using a profile dressing roll, thereby combining flexibility with short dressing times.

From global checks to local insights.
Modern gear designs require more than just normative verification. Gears that pass standard calculations can still hide critical local stresses. The FVA-Workbench extends ISO-based assessments with analysis, revealing stress distributions across the entire tooth flank for targeted optimization and more reliable gear designs.
