In the Spotlight: A Conversation with Heat Treat 2023 Conference Chair Andrew Banka

The roots of heat-treating run deep within ASM (American Society for Materials) International, as its society was founded in Detroit in 1913 as The Steel Treaters Club. The heat-treating constituency of ASM created the Heat Treating Society (HTS) to provide focused leadership, communications, and service development to its network of worldwide membership of captive and commercial heat treaters, equipment manufacturers, researchers, governments, and technicians. To discuss Heat Treat 2023, the 32nd annual HTS Conference and Exhibition, Gear Technology took a moment to catch up with conference chair Andrew Banka, vice president of Airflow Sciences Corporation.

Zero Carbon Target?

Zero Carbon Target?

Induction is an eco-friendly heating method, as it does not generate carbon during the heating process. The electrification of the automobile and the manufacturing goal of a zero-carbon target process makes induction the perfect solution for heat treating, tempering, brazing, forging, and shrink fitting.

Low Pressure Carburizing of Gears

Low Pressure Carburizing of Gears

Solar Atmospheres provides low pressure carburizing (LPC) that significantly increases the surface hardness/strength of steel parts for improved friction and wear. Performing LPC in a vacuum furnace eliminates oxygen and prevents IGO (intergranular oxidation) that is inherent in atmospheric carburizing, resulting in clean parts with less distortion reducing post process finishing operations, and costs.
