Changing Technologies, Changing Perspectives

A Conversation with Jeff Hemphill, CTO at Schaeffler Group USA Inc.

Matthew Jaster, Senior Editor

We first heard from Jeff Hemphill, CTO at Schaeffler Group USA Inc., during the CTI Symposium USA that took place May 2016 in Novi, Michigan. Hemphill discussed how Schaeffler was creating an entirely new mobile ecosystem by improving transmission efficiency and noise, vibration and hardness (NVH) testing. Hemphill’s presentation was one of the highlights of the week. Months later, PTE Magazine had an opportunity to further discuss the automotive industry, mechatronics and Schaeffler’s unique role in creating these new mobile ecosystems.

Worm Gear Drives - Stock Drive Products/Sterling Instrument

Worm gear drives, consisting of two parts: a steel worm gear and a bronze worm wheel are used in commercial and industrial applications where fast braking or stopping is required, space is limited, and noise is a concern. For precision gears, custom gearboxes and power transmission components go to SDP/SI.

New! Rack Jack: Synchronous Lifting System

New! Rack Jack: Synchronous Lifting System

Rack Jack provides simple, synchronous lifting motion. The system of rack and pinion transforms linear motion to rotation and vice versa. Rack Jacks come in 3 sizes and are available with one or two pushers (racks). Four standard input options and customized designs available, universal housing with many mounting options.

Couplings Facilitate Smaller Machine Footprint

Couplings Facilitate Smaller Machine Footprint

The quest for smaller machine footprints continues as designers seek new ways to reduce machine size while increasing output. The Zero-Max CD coupling provides precise and reliable shaft connections in less space than other couplings. It operates without fatigue for reliable 24/7 operation required in the latest machine designs.
